These beads appear dark in normal lighting, but they reveal their secret superpower when backlit…incredible honeycomb patterning inside the larger beads. They were likely made in the 1920s, using rods of phenolic resin. There are seven graduating sizes of beads, with the largest central bead measuring just shy of 1 inch. The two smallest sized beads are clearly translucent with no inclusions, and in the larger beads with strong backlighting you can see the stunning interior textures.
The entire strand is 41” long, including the knotting between the beads. There is no clasp, only a ring,. I am happy to add a clasp, if desired, but there really is no need for one as the necklace is plenty long. 101 grams in weight, and they test positive for phenolic resin/Bakelite. Please see the additional photos which show the blue-green color they reflect under UV light, another positive test for Bakelite.
I believe these beads are quite hard to come by and that they are more antique than vintage which is evidenced by the deep color curing over time. I feel a rich history and reverence when I hold them, and yet, from casual appearance, most people would not recognize just how unique and special they are. I trust that they will go to a collector who appreciates their beauty as much as I do.
